Vibrating Space Boots Guide Wearers Around Obstacles

In the past few months, we have covered a bunch of smart GPS shoes for visually impaired people. As it turns out, researchers from MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics are further exploring this area. They are developing a space boot with sensors and haptic motors to guide the wearer around or over obstacles with vibrations. This technology can also be used to make life easier for visually impaired individuals.

The boot will have motors at the toe, heel, and toward the front of the outside of the foot. Vibration intensity jumps from low to high when the wearer is at risk of colliding with an obstacle. MIT has covered more about these boots here.
